Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth. Psalm 80:1 (KJV)

In this verse, the Psalmist is pleading to God to lend him His ear. He is in a place where he needs God’s help and guidance. A shepherd is a great help to his sheep. The shepherd spends his days caring, leading, feeding and protecting his flock. The shepherd has no greater concern in life than the well being of his flock. So it is with our God and Shepherd who is totally concerned with our every need. God is referred to as one who leadeth His people like a flock. God had led all the tribes of Israel from Egypt, across the Red Sea and over the Jordan River into Canaan land. David expresses his great confidence in God, and knows what God did in the past He can do for David in the present. What great care and concern our Heavenly Shepherd shows to His flock. There is never a moment that He is not leading us. As He leads us, He takes great care for our well being. First of all, He provides us with spiritual food. God’s Holy Word is food for our soul. Can you imagine how unhealthy our souls would be without the Word of God? He also provides us with living water. When the woman at the well met Jesus, He told her of living water. The water that Jesus gave her was a spring that would never run dry. The physical water satisfies for a season, but we must drink again. The water that our Shepherd leads us to brings eternal satisfaction. Lastly, the shepherd’s greatest task is to lead the flock. Our Great Shepherd has led us through many dangers, toils and snares, and one day our Shepherd will lead us into His very presence to commune with Him forever. Amen.
